AoC class guide / Ranged damage

Destruction Warlock: build shards, choose your moment.

A visible stack of Soul Shards turns your next Chaos Bolt into a threat. Learn to create a casting window, spend deliberately and survive the answer.

Values through v0.26Checked 2 November 2026Mana + Soul Shards · no demon

Switch to Destruction and learn the bar.

In Arena of Champions, select Warlock, then choose Destruction in Spells & Talents or the hero panel. Added in v0.23 Shards of Chaos, it is the third Warlock specialization alongside Affliction and Demonology. Destruction deals ranged damage and has no demon pet.

The default action bar is Incinerate, Immolate, Conflagrate, Chaos Bolt, Shadow Bolt, Fear, Death Coil and Healthstone. Find the defensive and control buttons before queuing; do not spend your first match looking for them.

Version scope: the numbers here reflect official client configuration and in-game patch notes through v0.26, checked on 2 November 2026 (UTC+8). They are base values before modifiers. The match plans below are editorial practice suggestions, without a tier ranking or rated-match benchmark.

Build a stack you can use.

Your first talent row determines how you generate Soul Shards; your second sets a cap of 3, 9 or 12. Every round starts at zero. Violet spirits circle over you, showing everyone how many shards you hold, so a large stack also warns the other team.

Since v0.26, shards remain for the match even when no enemy is in sight. You can reposition without the old one-shard-per-4-seconds decay. That does not make hiding a way to generate shards: you still need the trigger specified by your selected talent.

Separate three decisions: how to generate, how many to hold and when to spend. A larger cap gives room to save more, while Dark Bargain also makes holding that stack dangerous. Read your selected row before assuming every Warlock has the same cap.

Use Immolate, Conflagrate and Chaos Bolt together.

Immolate has a 1.5-second cast. Incinerate has a 2-second cast for 400 Fire damage. With Fire and Ash, finishing either cast gives a shard. Use available space to build pressure before asking a partner to help you land the spender.

Conflagrate is instant, has a 10-second cooldown and requires your Immolate on the target. It deals 420 Fire and preserves Immolate. Backdraft makes your next two casts of Chaos Bolt, Incinerate, Immolate or Shadow Bolt within 10 seconds take 40% less time. One charge goes to the eligible cast you use next; plan which casts should benefit.

Chaos Bolt has a base 3-second cast, 15-second cooldown and 400 mana cost. It deals 800 Fire plus 125 for each Soul Shard spent, consuming every held shard. Devastation raises that bonus to 175. The slow projectile passes through absorb shields and leaves those shields intact.

Chaos Scar lasts 6 seconds after the shard impact. While present, no Warlock’s Chaos Bolt gains shard damage against that target. Watch the target’s effect and coordinate with another Destruction player rather than overlapping two shard stacks into the same scar.

Talent row 1: choose how shards arrive.

  • Fire and Ash. Each completed Immolate or Incinerate gives one shard.
  • Conflagration of Chaos. Each Conflagrate gives four shards.
  • Demon Skin. Enemy physical blows landing on you give one shard, at most once every 1.5 seconds.

Fire and Ash rewards successful casts. Conflagration of Chaos links generation to a cooldown and your Immolate setup. Demon Skin depends on taking physical attacks; do not expose yourself solely to fill a resource bar.

Talent row 2: choose a cap and its cost.

  • Soulwell. Hold up to nine shards; each dispel or purge takes one.
  • Ruin. Hold up to three; each shard Chaos Bolt spends takes 0.3 seconds off its cast.
  • Dark Bargain. Hold up to twelve, but take 2% more damage for every shard held.

Try one cap against the same practice situation. A three-shard cap reaches its limit sooner; a twelve-shard stack takes more preparation and increases incoming damage. Avoid presenting a theoretical full-stack hit as guaranteed arena output.

Talent row 3: prepare a defensive response.

  • Nether Protection. Healthstone also stops all damage to you for 2 seconds.
  • Shadow Ward. Death Coil also grants you a 1500 absorb shield for 8 seconds, without spending shards.
  • Soulstone. Dropping below 20% health heals 40% of your health, once every 2 minutes, without spending shards.

Choose around the response you can track. Know whether your protection comes from an active button or a low-health trigger, and agree with a healer about the next response after it ends.

Talent row 4: help the Bolt land or spread.

  • Bane. Chaos Bolt casts 7% faster per held shard, up to 70%.
  • Devastation. Each shard Chaos Bolt spends adds 175 damage instead of 125.
  • Havoc. Launch a second full Chaos Bolt, including shard damage, at the enemy nearest the main target within 15 m.

Bane addresses the time needed to cast, Devastation increases the shard payoff, and Havoc needs a nearby second enemy. Check positioning and any controlled secondary target before choosing to duplicate pressure. This row was reworked in v0.23.1; Soulshatter and Doom are gone. Do not copy their old descriptions into a current build.

Talent row 5: add an active tool.

  • Shadowfury. Deal 200 Shadow and stun enemies within 6 m of a chosen spot up to 30 m away for 3 seconds; 45-second cooldown.
  • Soul Swap. Plant your shards in an enemy for 12 seconds. Each cast they finish bursts one for 300 Shadow; remaining shards return. The cooldown is 20 seconds.
  • Shadowburn. An instant 1000 Shadow hit against a target below 20% health, plus 100 for each shard held. It keeps the shards and has a 15-second cooldown.

Bind the selected active where you can reach it while moving. Shadowfury asks for ground targeting, Soul Swap depends on enemy casts, and Shadowburn depends on an execute threshold. Practise the actual condition instead of treating the three options as interchangeable damage buttons.

Create a casting window with your partner.

Before contact, confirm your cap, generation talent, defensive and final-row button. Choose a damage target and agree who controls an opponent who could interrupt you. Keep a route back toward cover and your support.

Apply Immolate, generate shards using your chosen trigger, then look for a window where the target remains reachable and enemy interrupts are accounted for. Conflagrate provides Backdraft; decide whether to use a charge on Chaos Bolt before spending it on a filler cast. A capped stack is a reason to consider spending, not a reason to ignore incoming pressure.

If the cast is unsafe, move and defend. Shards now survive a retreat, so keeping a usable position can preserve the next attempt. After a Bolt, watch Chaos Scar before planning another shard hit on that target. Review whether a failed attempt came from an interrupt, range, sight line or poor timing.

For a team, discuss who can help create space and who covers recovery after your attack. A healer can support a longer exchange if you remain in sight; another damage player needs a shared attack and reset plan. The team builder checks roles, while the talent worksheet helps choose a practice goal. Neither tool establishes the strongest composition.

Test one interaction at a time.

Start with Fire and Ash and practise finishing Immolate and Incinerate while tracking the shard count. Repeat with another generator to see which trigger you can use reliably. Next, use Conflagrate and observe the next two eligible casts. Finally, land Chaos Bolt and inspect Chaos Scar before repeating.

Keep the opponent and situation similar when comparing Bane, Devastation and Havoc. Ask whether you finished the cast and whether the extra target was available. This produces a useful learning task without turning one result into a balance ranking.

Frequently asked questions.

How do I select Destruction Warlock in Arena of Champions?

Select Warlock and pick Destruction in Spells & Talents or the hero panel. It is a ranged damage specialization using Mana and Soul Shards, with no demon pet.

Do Soul Shards fade when I hide?

Not in v0.26. Shards last the match even without an enemy in sight. Each round starts at zero, and talents determine generation and the cap of 3, 9 or 12.

Does Conflagrate consume Immolate?

No. Since v0.23.1 it preserves your Immolate and deals 420 Fire. Backdraft reduces the next two eligible cast times by 40% in v0.24 and later.

Which fourth-row Destruction talent should I choose?

Bane shortens Chaos Bolt casts with held shards, Devastation raises the damage per shard, and Havoc duplicates the Bolt onto a nearby enemy. Choose for the situation you are practising; this guide does not rank them by win rate.

Why did my next Chaos Bolt get no shard bonus?

Chaos Scar lasts 6 seconds and prevents shard damage from any caster’s Chaos Bolt against that target while active. Check the effect before planning another shard spend.
