AoC class guide / Ranged damage

Elemental Shaman: make room to cast.

The ranged Shaman spec added in AoC v0.22 turns your Flame Shock into guaranteed Lava Burst crits. Learn the spells, compare all five talent rows and build a plan for your first matches.

AoC v0.225 talent rows · 15 choicesChecked 1 November 2026

Start with the Elemental game plan.

Elemental is a mana-based ranged damage specialization in Arena of Champions. It joins Restoration and Enhancement as Shaman’s third spec, bringing the game to 20 specializations across nine classes. Your basic loop is to apply your own Flame Shock, land Lava Burst while that effect is active, and fill safe casting time with Lightning Bolt. Chain Lightning adds pressure when enemies stand close together.

The difficult part is finding that safe casting time. Thunderstorm pushes nearby enemies away, Frost Shock slows a pursuer, and Wind Shear interrupts a dangerous cast. Use those tools to regain a useful position with your partner, then resume damage. Running farther away without a plan can also put your target or healer out of sight.

Know your damage spells.

Flame Shock → Lava Burst

Flame Shock: instant, 200 mana, 25 m range. It deals 160 Fire damage immediately, then 70 every 3 seconds for 12 seconds. Its 6-second cooldown is shared with Earth Shock and Frost Shock.

Lava Burst: 250 mana, 2-second cast, 8-second cooldown, 30 m range and 550 base Fire damage. It is guaranteed to crit when the target has your own Flame Shock. Another Shaman’s Flame Shock does not meet that condition. A target switch or dispel can remove your setup; confirm the effect before relying on the crit.

Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning

Lightning Bolt: 250 mana, 2-second cast, 30 m range and 440 base Nature damage. This is your repeatable cast between other actions, provided you have space to finish it.

Chain Lightning: 300 mana, 1.5-second cast, 6-second cooldown and 30 m range. It hits for 380 base Nature damage with up to two jumps within 10 m, each with a 0.85 damage multiplier. An isolated target gets a 1.15 multiplier. The initial hit and leaps happen as the cast finishes. Think about nearby targets before using it around crowd control that breaks on damage.

Earth Shock and Frost Shock

Earth Shock: instant, 200 mana, 25 m range and 340 base Nature damage. Fulmination can add a shield-orb discharge and conditional interrupt; Earth Shock has no baseline interrupt in this configuration.

Frost Shock: instant, 200 mana, 25 m range and 200 base Frost damage, with a dispellable 50% slow for 8 seconds. Use it to help create distance when someone closes on you.

One shared shock cooldown: Flame Shock, Frost Shock and Earth Shock all share the same 6-second cooldown. You cannot press them back to back as three independent instant attacks. Choosing a slow can delay reapplying Flame Shock; plan that tradeoff before your next Lava Burst.

Use the rest of the Shaman kit.

  • Thunderstorm: 30-second cooldown; deals 250 Nature damage to enemies within 10 m and knocks them back 10 m. Save it for a moment when the space helps you or your partner. Astral Shift changes when you can use it.
  • Searing Totem: 150 mana, 10-second cooldown and an 8-second duration. Every 1.5 seconds it shoots your target, or the nearest enemy within its 25 m reach, for 50 Fire damage. Only one totem can be active; any blow kills it. Row four can replace it entirely.
  • Wind Shear: 12-second cooldown, 25 m range and off the global cooldown. It interrupts a cast and locks that school for 3 seconds. Keep it accessible while moving; it is separate from your shocks.
  • Lightning Shield: 100 mana; a dispellable 10-minute shield starting with three orbs. Weapon blows spend an orb to strike for 100 damage, with a 2-second lockout. Fulmination and Storm Shield care about those orbs.
  • Ghost Wolf: 100 mana, normally a 1.5-second cast, with 30% increased movement speed. Recast it or use a spell to leave the form. You cannot attack or cast while in it, and Hex or Polymorph cannot land on the shifted form. Improved Ghost Wolf removes the cast time.
  • Purge: 150 mana and 30 m range; removes one beneficial dispellable effect from an enemy. Use it with a specific buff in mind rather than repeatedly spending mana without checking the target.
  • Hex: 250 mana, 1.5-second cast, 45-second cooldown and 25 m range. It is a dispellable 8-second incapacitate that breaks on damage and has incapacitate diminishing returns. Coordinate a separate target for your team’s damage.
  • Lesser Healing Wave / Healing Wave: friendly-target heals at 30 m. Lesser costs 400 mana, casts in 1.5 seconds and heals 620; Healing Wave costs 600, casts in 2.5 seconds and heals 1,250. Helping with a heal costs time and mana, so find cover and avoid treating yourself as a dedicated Restoration healer.

The default Elemental bar contains Lightning Bolt, Lava Burst, Chain Lightning, Flame Shock, Frost Shock, Wind Shear, Thunderstorm and Searing Totem. Check your current bindings and arrange the other shared spells where you can reach them. Talent replacements and a row-five active can change which buttons you need.

Try a simple learning build.

For a first practice session, try Lightning Overload → Improved Ghost Wolf → Astral Shift → Searing Flames → Elemental Mastery, one choice from each row. This is a suggested learning loadout for practising basic casts, movement and a single active burst cooldown. It has not been established as the strongest arena build.

  • Row 1 — Lightning Overload: reinforces the Lightning Bolt cast you are already learning.
  • Row 2 — Improved Ghost Wolf: makes entering your movement form instant.
  • Row 3 — Astral Shift: adds damage reduction during specified control and lets you Thunderstorm while stunned.
  • Row 4 — Searing Flames: keeps your damage totem, with a stacking burn, instead of swapping its job.
  • Row 5 — Elemental Mastery: gives you an instant offensive cast and a haste window to practise deliberately.

Change one row when you can describe the problem. If repeated melee contact prevents casting, test Earthgrab Totem. If harmful magic effects are the issue, compare Cleansing Totem. If you need a channelled stun for a coordinated attack, investigate Lightning Lasso. The build-planning worksheet can help you record a practice goal; make the actual talent selections in the game.

Talent row 1: choose a pressure mechanic.

  • Lightning Overload. Every Lightning Bolt calls a smaller second bolt for 35% of its damage. This is a guaranteed extra bolt in this configuration, rather than a listed random proc chance.
  • Liquid Magma. Each Lava Burst leaves its own magma pool, 4 m across, for 6 seconds. Enemies inside take 50 Fire damage each second and are slowed by 30%.
  • Fulmination. Earth Shock also spends one Lightning Shield orb for 100 Nature damage. If the target is casting, it interrupts and locks that school for 2 seconds, at most once every 12 seconds. With no orb left, it is only Earth Shock.

How to choose: Overload supports repeatable casting; Magma asks enemies to remain in its small area; Fulmination asks you to track shield orbs, a cast and its separate interrupt lockout. Keep Wind Shear available even when taking Fulmination.

Talent row 2: movement, instant casts or support.

  • Improved Ghost Wolf. Ghost Wolf becomes instant.
  • Lava Flows. When your Flame Shock expires or is dispelled, your next Lava Burst within 10 seconds is instant.
  • Ancestral Current. Your direct Nature damage from Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and its leaps, and Earth Shock heals your most injured ally within 30 m for 20% of that damage.

How to choose: Choose instant Ghost Wolf for easier repositioning. Lava Flows helps you act after Flame Shock ends, but does not itself reapply Flame Shock or guarantee the next Lava Burst crit. Ancestral Current adds conditional support through the named Nature attacks, not through all Fire damage.

Talent row 3: charges or protection.

  • Echo of the Elements. Lava Burst holds two charges.
  • Storm Shield. When your Lightning Shield’s last orb is spent, you cast Thunderstorm.
  • Astral Shift. You take 25% less damage while stunned, feared or silenced. Thunderstorm can be cast while stunned, but the stun remains.

How to choose: Echo lets you hold an extra Lava Burst charge for a useful opening. Storm Shield ties its response to the last shield orb being spent. Astral Shift offers protection during the listed control effects; it is not permanent damage reduction or a stun removal.

Talent row 4: decide your totem’s job.

  • Earthgrab Totem. Replaces Searing Totem. Costs 150 mana, has a 30-second cooldown and lasts up to 20 seconds. Every 2 seconds it roots enemies within 6 m that are not already rooted for 4 seconds, subject to root diminishing returns. Destroying the totem ends its grip.
  • Cleansing Totem. Replaces Searing Totem. Costs 150 mana and has a 30-second cooldown. For 4 seconds it pulses once per second, each pulse removing the newest harmful magic effect from you and each ally within 10 m.
  • Searing Flames. Keeps Searing Totem. Its bolts add a burn dealing 15 Fire damage every 3 seconds for 15 seconds, stacking up to five times.

How to choose: Earthgrab trades totem damage for nearby roots; Cleansing trades it for timed magic removal; Searing Flames keeps the damage role. You do not gain all three totems from this row. One totem at a time and death to any blow make placement important.

Talent row 5: add an active spell.

  • Elemental Mastery. Your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Lava Burst is instant, and you cast 15% faster for 15 seconds. The cooldown is 2 minutes and activation is off the global cooldown.
  • Earthquake. Costs 400 mana, with a 1-minute cooldown and 30 m targeting range. An 8 m circle lasts 8 seconds, dealing 35 Physical damage twice a second to enemies inside. Each is knocked down for 1 second when first caught, subject to stun diminishing returns. You and allies standing inside take 15% less damage.
  • Lightning Lasso. Costs 300 mana, with a 45-second cooldown and 20 m range. Channel for 4 seconds, dealing 125 Nature damage per tick, starting immediately, for 500 total. The enemy is stunned while you hold the channel; stun diminishing returns are counted once.

How to choose: Mastery supports a casting window; Earthquake rewards useful ground placement for pressure and protection; Lasso commits you to a channel at a shorter range than your 30 m attacks. Give the chosen active a reachable binding and practise its targeting before queuing.

Turn the toolkit into a match plan.

  1. Before contact: check your selected talents, totem button, Lightning Shield and partner position. Decide which enemy you will damage and which one your team wants to control.
  2. Set up pressure: apply your Flame Shock from within 25 m, then seek a safe Lava Burst cast while it is active. Cast Lightning Bolt between other actions. Consider Chain Lightning when its extra targets are useful, while avoiding damage on a Hex target.
  3. Spend a planned window: if you chose Elemental Mastery, activate it when you can connect to the target and follow with pressure. Choose which eligible spell should consume the instant cast; do not assume all three become instant.
  4. Respond to pressure: interrupt an important cast with Wind Shear. Use Frost Shock or Thunderstorm when the slow or knockback creates a useful route. With Astral Shift, Thunderstorm is available during a stun, but you still need an answer for the remaining stun duration.
  5. Reset and review: get back to a position where you can see the target and receive help. Recheck your Flame Shock and shield orbs. Ask whether your last lost cast came from range, line of sight, an interrupt or a decision to move.

This is a priority plan rather than a fixed rotation. A heal, interrupt or movement decision can be more valuable than another damage cast. In team brackets, agree on control timing and a place to retreat; the team builder can check role coverage, but does not rank Elemental compositions.

Practise the mistakes that cost casts.

  • Missing Lava Burst crits: check for your own Flame Shock, not merely a Flame Shock icon from another Shaman. A Lava Flows instant cast still needs the normal crit condition.
  • A shock button is unavailable: look at the shared 6-second shock cooldown before assuming a keybind is broken.
  • No Searing Totem after changing talents: Earthgrab or Cleansing replaces it. Read the new totem’s cooldown and purpose.
  • Hex ends immediately: inspect nearby Chain Lightning jumps, magma pools and ongoing totem pressure. Keep damage away from the controlled target.
  • Fulmination fails to interrupt: check that the target is actually casting, that you have a Lightning Shield orb and that the 12-second interrupt limit has ended.
  • Lightning Lasso gives poor value: check positioning and stun diminishing returns before committing to the 4-second channel. Tell your partner when you intend to use it.

Start in practice with one exercise: apply Flame Shock, land Lava Burst, make space with a utility spell, then resume casting. Repeat with one talent change and compare that same situation. A few controlled repetitions explain more than swapping the entire build after one loss.

Frequently asked questions.

What is Elemental Shaman in Arena of Champions?

Elemental is the ranged damage Shaman specialization added in AoC v0.22. It uses Flame Shock to enable guaranteed Lava Burst crits, Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning for Nature damage, and tools such as Thunderstorm and Wind Shear.

What is a beginner Elemental Shaman build for AoC v0.22?

A suggested practice loadout is Lightning Overload, Improved Ghost Wolf, Astral Shift, Searing Flames and Elemental Mastery. It supports basic casting, movement and one active burst cooldown. It is an editorial learning suggestion, not a tested best build.

How many Elemental Shaman talent choices are there?

The checked v0.22 client configuration has five Elemental talent rows with three choices per row: 15 options in total. Choose one from each row in the game.

Why does my Lava Burst not always crit?

The guaranteed crit requires your own Flame Shock on the target. Another Shaman’s effect does not satisfy it. Lava Flows makes a Lava Burst instant after your Flame Shock ends, but does not remove the Flame Shock requirement for a guaranteed crit.

Can Elemental use Searing, Earthgrab and Cleansing Totem together?

No. Row four offers one choice: Earthgrab Totem or Cleansing Totem replaces Searing Totem, while Searing Flames keeps and improves Searing Totem. The checked configuration allows one active totem at a time.
